Why this format works

Families get a quick window into the classroom experience, plus a few simple ideas they can carry into the week at home.

From the classroom

Thoughtful updates, visual moments, and family-friendly context about what learning looked like this week.

April has brought so much life and curiosity into our Bilingual Stars learning pod. Over the last couple of weeks, the children have had special visitors in the classroom: caterpillars. They quickly became a source of wonder, delight, and nonstop conversation.

It has been a joy to watch students read about caterpillars and then observe them in real time as they move from active, fuzzy little bodies to the quiet stillness of a cocoon. The excitement spilled into the rest of our day too. I heard requests to bring the habitat to the snack table, watched children build pretend cocoons during play, and saw butterflies appear through movement and dance.

"It is so amazing to witness their sense of wonder and curiosity."

Caterpillars, curiosity, and classroom wonder

The caterpillars became instant classroom celebrities and gave the children a real-time window into observation, wonder, and scientific thinking.

Those small moments of noticing have shaped the feel of the pod lately. Children have been eager to talk, ask questions, and revisit what they saw the next time we met. It has been a lovely reminder that deep learning often begins with simple fascination.

Engineering, stories, and active play

In Engineering, our young problem-solvers have been brainstorming solutions to the kinds of challenges that show up in beloved stories. We used Jack and the Beanstalk and The Three Little Pigs as jumping-off points for design thinking, creativity, and conversation.

Story-inspired building time gave students a playful way to test ideas, compare structures, and explain their thinking out loud.
  • Students imagined parachutes for Jack.
  • They designed stronger, sturdier houses for the Three Little Pigs.
  • They practiced testing ideas and explaining why one solution might work better than another.
  • They also kept building coordination and endurance through Baseball, Pickleball, and Soccer.

That combination of storytelling, hands-on problem solving, and movement has made our sessions feel playful while still deeply purposeful.

Math with a strong concrete foundation

In Math, we have been focusing on building a strong concrete foundation before moving too quickly into the abstract challenges that often appear in later elementary grades. This step matters. It helps prevent the kinds of struggles that can happen when children are pushed toward symbols before they truly understand what the numbers represent.

Table work has blended number sense, writing practice, and manipulatives so children can see and feel the ideas before moving into abstraction.

Each session, we focus on one number and approach it in several ways. Students practice writing it with "sky fingers" and on paper. We skip it on the number line, match it to concrete objects, and add it to a number. For learners ready for more, we have also started skip counting by 2s and 3s.

Growing confidence in Spanish

Our Spanish focus has been on helping students feel more confident speaking the language out loud. We have been reciting numbers, letter sounds, and common verbs, singing in Spanish, and practicing simple conversations together. The goal is not only recognition, but comfort and joy in using the language.

We also began reading a bilingual story I wrote about a parrot named Paco and his adventures. This week, we are learning how to describe ourselves. Families also have a slide deck with a coloring page for extra practice, which has been a fun extension of our work together.

Books, phonics, and growing friendships

Beyond academics, shared routines and movement have helped friendships grow in a calm, connected, and supportive environment.

Reading has centered on falling in love with great books while building a strong phonics and phonemic awareness foundation. Pout Pout Fish has been a huge hit. The children have enjoyed reading several books in the series and talking about the lessons they can apply in their own lives.

Beyond academics, one of the sweetest parts of this season has been watching friendships deepen as children get to know each other better. The pod keeps growing not just in knowledge, but in kindness, familiarity, and shared joy.

Thank you for your ongoing trust and support.
